Skilled Trades Pre-Apprenticeship for Teens

Goal: $100,000
Funding Deadline: March 21, 2025
Giving Type: General Support

Project Description

Help fund career exploration for youth through a summer long apprenticeship readiness program. This hands-on, paid “earn while you learn” opportunity introduces Des Moines area teens to the building trades. Much like a true registered apprenticeship, there is a blend of classroom and jobsite. Your donation will 100% directly support training youth who have an expressed interest in entering building trade careers. Highest Quality Curriculum: Multi-Craft Core Curriculum (MC3) exposes teens and young adults to an introduction to building trades. • Construction Industry Orientation • Tools and Materials • Construction Health and Safety • Blueprint Reading • Basic Math for Construction • Heritage of the American Worker • Diversity in the Construction Industry • Green Construction • Financial Literacy • Soft Skills • Mock Interviewing Field Trips: local registered apprenticeship training centers, experiencing hands-on introductions to each skilled trade, while meeting experts and apprentices. Jobsites visits. Hands-On Experience: Habitat for Humanity will host our hands-on work, as will visits to the shops at apprenticeship training centers. Certificate: participants receive OSHA 10, First Aid / CPR training and graduate with MC3 an industry-recognized credential and certificate. This program is recognized by the U.S. Dept of Labor as a registered pre-apprenticeship to Central Iowa Building Trades and the 16 local Building Trades Apprenticeships, much like our sister program at the University of Iowa Labor Center in Iowa City (for 17+). Pathway to Building Trades aids in job placement and apprenticeship applications to walk the path to Building Trades with our participants.
